50 Years of Care: The Story Behind L’Occitane and the Beauty Rituals We Keep

Fifty years on, L’Occitane en Provence marks a milestone that is not only about how a beauty brand was built, but about the people who made space for it in their everyday lives. Reaching a 50th anniversary is not simply a measure of time. It reflects trust, repetition, and the beauty rituals that people return to, year after year.

Our brand story has flourished because of you. As routines, needs, and beauty landscapes have evolved, L’Occitane has remained part of everyday beauty rituals around the world. Its heritage holds meaning only because it continues to be used.

A Brand Story Rooted in Provence and Everyday Use

At 23, Olivier Baussan distilled rosemary using a traditional still. Not with the ambition of building a global beauty brand, but with a simple intention: to create something honest, rooted in nature, and made with care. That spirit still lives today.

In 1978, production moved into a small village near Manosque, where everything was crafted by hand, guided by artisanal expertise that still shapes us today. Imperfect at times, but always intentional. From the very beginning, it was never about speed or scale, but about honoring Provençal heritage and making each piece with care.

In 1980, Olivier Baussan began making soaps using traditional French methods, where oils are patiently transformed into soap through the craft of saponification. They were simple, practical, and made with care, a way of working that still defines the brand today. Soon after, shea butter became part of the brand story through a meaningful partnership with women in West Africa who harvest it. From the start, it was never about simply sourcing. It was about recognising their expertise and choosing to build a partnership grounded in respect, fairness, and continuity.

Over time, these decisions led to products that became part of your everyday beauty rituals. The Shea Butter Hand Cream is one of them. It is simple, effective, and reliable, which is why people keep coming back to it.

As the brand journeyed beyond Provence to homes around the world, one thing remained unchanged: we didn’t want to change your rituals; we wanted to become part of them. Thoughtful details, from responsibly sourced ingredients to packaging designed with Braille and sustainability in mind, have always been at the heart of L’OCCITANE.

The L'Occitane 50th anniversary is not just about looking back. It is about recognising what has stayed the same. Beauty rituals around the world may look different for everyone, but they share one thing. They are personal, repeated, and built over time. L’Occitane has always been a small part of those moments, fitting into routines rather than changing them. Fifty years later, the history of L'OCCITANE is still being shaped in this way. Not by big changes, but by doing things consistently, and doing them intentionally.
